A good catch from Virat Kohli as well. Tossed up ball around off, it comes slowly off the deck. Buttler runs down the track, isn’t quite to the pitch of the ball but still goes on with the shot. Hits it a bit uppishly towards short extra cover where Kohli moves swiftly to his right and gobbles a spectacular catch. He then throws the ball upwards and Jadeja is all smiles. A 69-run stand has been broken and India once again on top now. ENG 213/6 in 68.1 overs 14.35 IST: Kohli starts with Jadeja after the tea-break and the left-arm spinner gives only two runs. Bairstow and Buttler have done well by keeping the Indian bowlers at bay. Can the hosts get the breakthrough? 14.12 IST: England 205/5 at tea. Bairstow 66*, Buttler 38*, Jadeja 1/3614.07 IST: Bairstow and Buttler have stitched a solid stand for England after Stokes’ dismissal. Their partnership is worth 53 now. ENG 202/5 in 61 overs13.44 IST: FOUR BYES! What happened there? That missed everything. Big latemovement for Yadav, landing full around middle, Bairstow fails to keepit out and it goes past the leg stump and the diving keeper to the fineleg fence. The bowler deserved a wicket there. ENG 179/5 in 56 overs13.38 IST: EDGED AND FOUR! Umesh delivers a full length ball outside off, Buttlergoes back to punch it through the line but it catches a fat outside edge and screams right through the gap between Kohli(1st slip) and Nair(2ndslip) for a boundary at third slip. Both fielders watched each other as it sped through. Didn’t carry though. ENG 166/5 in 54 overs13.35 IST: FOUR! Slightly edgy! Umesh lands it full and outside off, Buttler getson the front foot with an angled bat and eases it off the outside halfof the bat to the third man fence.13.25 IST: Leg-spinner Amit Mishra turned 34 on November 24th. Here’s how he celebrated his birthday. advertisement13.09 IST: Stumping chance missed! Tossed up ball outside off, Bairstow gets forward with a big stretch and tries to drive but misses. Patel fails to collect the ball cleanly and Bairstow gets a reprieve. His back leg was outside the crease for a while. In fact, the replays show that there was an outside edge too and it will also go down as a dropped catch.13.04 IST: Bairstow hits his 13th Test fifty as ENG 149/5 in 45.1 overs. He is having a great year in Test cricket. 12.58 IST: OUT! Jadeja strikes, gets rid of Stokes for 29. Stokes throws it away. Jadeja serves a quicker full ball on off, Stokes dances down the track looking for a big shot, a premeditated attempt, completely misses the ball and Parthiv does the rest in a flash. He played for the spin which wasn’t there and it brought his downfall. Stokes starts to walk but then there is something said to him. Not sure what? Kohli is shown in the next frame and umpire Marais Erasmus is calming him down. Everything under control. England lose another wicket and this is a big loss for them. ENG 144/5 in 44 overs12.48 IST: Fifty-run stand comes up between Bairstow and Stokes. They have been in a superb form as a pair and holds the most number of runs in partnerships this year. Shami overpitches and drops it around off, Stokes brings his powerful wrists into play and works it through the gap at mid-wicket for a boundary. Nicely done. ENG 116/4 in 33 overs12.24 IST: EDGE AND FOUR! Shami runs in from around the wicket and serves a full delivery just outside off. It shapes away after landing as Stokes attempts to cook a cover drive. But it takes a thick outside edge and speeds through the vacant third slip region for a boundary.12.21 IST: FOUR! Excellent shot! Perfect placement. Too full in length and around off, Bairstow takes a positive forward stride and drives it firmly past short cover for a cracking boundary. ENG 107/4 in 32 overs12.19 IST: 100 comes up for England in the 31st over.  12.10 IST: We are back for the afternoon session. There is some turn on offer but not that threatening enough as of now. Out walk the English batsmen, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes. India begin with Ravindra Jadeja after lunch. Let’s play…11.50 IST: A perfect start for India after losing the toss on a chilly morning. Alastair Cook got what he wanted but things didn’t go according to the plan. India didn’t start off well as they gave two reprieves to the English skipper and it seemed like he would make the home side pay for it. Umesh Yadav provided the first breakthrough when he got one delivery to shoot up and that spelled the end for the young Haseeb Hameed.Jayant Yadav then sent the man in form Joe Root back and Cook couldn’t do much as Ravichandran Ashwin showed him the way to the pavilion on his very first ball and made up for the dropped catch. Moeen Ali and Bairstow then tried to calm things down by nudging around and the former even struck a few lusty blows as well but just before lunch Kohli brought Shami back into the attack who got rid of Moeen. Ben Stokes has just come out to the middle and England really need to bat well if they are to post a decent first innings total.advertisementThough this is India’s session but they need to field well. Their fielding let them down in the previous Tests and they have not made any improvement in this game too. They have to rectify it sooner than later. Will we see the English middle order steadying the ship? Or will the home side run through with the cherry? Join us back at 12:10 IST for the post-lunch session. 11.30 IST: England 92/4 at lunch. Cook 27, Bairstow 20*, Ashwin 1/14, Umesh 1/30, Jayant 1/26, Shami 1/2211.22 IST: OUT! Shami strikes as England lose Moeen Ali for 16.  The change in bowling works wonders for India. Kohli is absolutely delighted and why won’t he be? Shmai hits the deck hard and it jumps on Moeen who tries to go for the pull. He is cramped for room but still goes after it. A top edge balloons towards fine leg where Vijay takes a safe catch. Virat walks towards him and gives him a pat on the back. ENG 87/4 in 26.3 overs 11.11 IST: FOUR! That’s nicely done! Jayant bowls a loopy ball around off, turning in as well. Bairstow gets down and across to play the paddle sweep. He connects it well and the ball rolls towards fine leg. Vijay comes running to his right, puts in a dive but that is really sloppy. He got to the ball and could have done better. Kohli is not happy with it and immediately asks Murali Vijay to come at mid off. ENG 85/3 in 25 overs11.06 IST: SIX! That’s huge and even better! Jayant once again tosses it up around middle and off, Moeen Ali jumps down the track, gets to the pitch of the ball and goes bang over the bowler’s head for a maximum. He is taking the attack to the opposition. ENG 78/3 in 23 overs11.05 IST: FOUR! That’s a lovely shot! Loopy ball around middle and off from Jayant and Moeen Ali skips down the track and hits it over the bowler’s head for a one bounce boundary towards long on. Good shot!11.00 IST: FOUR! That’s a gorgeous shot! Loops it up around off, Bairstow takes full toll of it as he makes room and drives it exquisitely through covers. Ashwin at short extra cover puts in a dive but to no avail. The ball sped away to the fence. ENG 66/3 in 21 oversAP Photo 10.42 IST: OUT! Ashwin strikes as Cook departs for 27! Ashwin strikes first ball and makes up for the dropped catch! He serves a gentle loosener, short and wide outside off, Cook rocks back to cut it through the line but gets a thin outside edge to the keeper. Parthiv makes no mistake and the finger goes up quickly again. Poor from the English skipper. England have thrown away the advantage of winning the toss and are in a spot of bother in spite of dropped catches by India. ENG 51/3 in 15.1 overs10.38 IST: OUT! Jayant Yadav traps Joe Root LBW for 15. Jayant strikes gold! Root is adjudged lbw and this is a massive breakthrough for India. He tosses up a fractionally short of a length ball, landing around off and turning in, Joe gets back and tries to hit it across the line but misses. He is rapped on the pads, they appeal and the finger goes up immediately. Root doesn’t even think about reviewing and trudges back. ENG 51/2 in 14.1 overs10.33 IST: Fifty comes up for England in the 14th over. So, the visitors going nicely in the first hour. Time for a Drinks Break!  ENG 51/1 in 14 overs10.20 IST: FOUR! That’s insult to an injury! Shami bangs in a back of a length ball but the line is wrong, it on the leg stump and Cook just uses the pace of it and rolls his wrists on it. The all goes towards fine leg for a boundary. ENG 36/1 in 11 overs10.18 IST: Dropped! Ravichandran Ashwin is the culprit. He has dropped a sitter, this is going to hurt India. Shami from around the wicket angles it in on middle, Cook shuffles across to flick but fails to keep it down. It goes at a comfortable height towards short mid-wicket where Ashwin comes running in to take that one but the ball bursts out of his palms. Kohli is stunned, Cook survives a scare here.10.16 IST: OUT! Umesh draws first blood, gets rid of Hameed for 9. There could nothing poor Hameed could do about it. Yadav bowls a length ball on off, it shoots off the deck sharply. Hameed tries to defend it off the front foot but the extra bounce does him in. It kisses the gloves and squirts up towards gully where Rahane takes a simple catch. They all appeal and the umpire gives it out after taking his time. Haseeb Hameed is staring the wicket and then starts to walk back. My colleague reminds me that Haseeb Hameed got out due to the low bounce in the last game and this time due to the extra bounce. ENG 32/1 in 10 overs10.11 IST: There is definitely something for the quicks, however, Shami and Umesh have not been lucky so far. Cook and Hameed doing well by seeing off the new ball. ENG  32/09.52 IST: Great over that from Shami by bowling in the right areas and forcing Cook to play forward. The England captain doesn’t like to play that much on the front foot. ENG 18/09.44 IST: Chance there in the slips and Jadeja was slow to react as the ball flies past him. Cook the batsman, Shami the bowler. ENG 12/09.30 IST: National Anthems are done and dusted and it’s time to get underway. The umpires and players have made their way out to the middle. Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed to open the batting for England. It will be Mohammed Shami who will start off with bowling proceedings has three slips and a gully in place. Here we go…9.25 IST: It’s time for the national anthems. We might just get a few wickets early on. Boys are eagerly waiting for this game and very important to keep the momentum going. KL Rahul exagarrated his injury that he got in the last game, Karun Nair will make his debut and will bat at 6. Parthiv Patel will open the innings with Vijay.Alastair Cook: We will bat first.
