Since there isn’t a new Castlevania game anywhere on the horizon, we’ll have to make do with the next best thing: a Netflix animated series. The famed streaming service has just released a teaser trailer for a new Castlevania show that promises to please fans of the franchise.Interestingly, the trailer doesn’t show footage from the series until the 41-second mark. The intro shows a person inserting a Castlevania cartridge into a Nintendo Entertainment System console. Once the system is booted up, a menu of Netflix shows appears on screen. The menu itself has graphics reminiscent of an 80’s computer game.Once Castlevania is selected, we see something that looks more like the Predator’s heat vision than NES graphics. After all that silliness, the actual trailer begins.”Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself,” reads the show’s official synopsis. “The animated series is written by best-selling author and comic-book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.”Though we don’t get to see much footage in this trailer, what’s shown is promising. It’s unclear what animation house worked on this series, but it could be a Japanese one. While this Castlevania series is animated, it appears to have its fair share of computer generated graphics. The tone of the series is about as grim and dark as you would expect. Perhaps — as producer Adi Shankar stated — the show “will end the streak and be the western world’s first good video game adaptation.”Castlevania Season 1, Part 1 will debut on July 7. This first part will be composed of four episodes. The second part is set to stream sometime in 2018.
