by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Linn Hibbs, a former head football coach at Wellington High School, has resigned after three seasons at Shawnee Mission Northwest.Shawnee Mission Northwest Athletic Director Angelo Giacalone confirmed that Hibbs had submitted his resignation Thursday morning to the school’s athletic office. His resignation is pending board approval.Giacalone said Hibb’s resignation is only for football and he will remain a high school physical education instructor.Giacalone would not elaborate any further citing personnel confidentiality.Hibbs, who was the head coach for Wellington High School from 1996-2010, had taken the head coaching job at Shawnee Northwest in the Kansas City area in 2012. In his three seasons he accumulated a 7-21 record at the Class 6A school. He was 2-7 in 2012, 3-7 in 2013 and 2-7 in 2014. Shawnee Mission Northwest is a member of the Sunflower League in northeast Kansas – considered by many to be toughest football league in the state. His Cougars did make the playoffs in 2013, losing to Lawrence Free State 40-14 in the first round.Hibbs was unavailable for comment at this writing.Hibbs is the most successful football coach in Wellington history having won two state championships in 2001 and 2002 and maintaining the state’s longest high school football playoff streak in the history of Kansas at the time.He won his 100th game in 2007 in the season opener against Kingman.Hibbs, a Wellington High School graduate from 1983, took over the program in 1996, and immediately took the team to a state semifinals where it would lose to Ulysses. This had been the first time Wellington had advanced that far in the playoffs since the 1992 season.Wellington would continue its playoff streak in the late 1990s, but the program under his watch didn’t really take off until 1999 when after a 1-5 start, the Crusaders would advance to the Class 4A state semifinals. From that point forward, Wellington would sustain unprecedented success — getting state runner-up in 2000 losing to Fort Scott in the finals. The two teams would play twice more with Wellington winning both times against Fort Scott in 2001 and 2002.Wellington would not return to the state finals thereafter but had a couple of long playoff runs. The program hit a snag in 2010 going 2-8. But Wellington was still able to get into the playoffs. He resigned that spring. Hibbs would remain in the USD 353 school system for a year as the Wellington Middle School physical education instructor while working as an assistant for Andover Central. One year later he took the head coaching job at Shawnee Mission Northwest.Follow us on Twitter. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password! With a record like his at Shawnee Mission and if you people didn’t know him you would raise hell if they hired him for a football coach. Lots of talent in those years, and nothing even close to that level now. He and staff also have a bad habitat of showcasing “thier” guys. This may work up to 4A but will not work in 5A-6A.
