first_imgThe 14th annual Lifford 5K Road Race and Walk will be held this Wednesday evening 15th July with a start time of 7.30pm.This race is one of the longest established on the Donegal Grand Prix circuit and has traditionally attracted some of the biggest fields of athletes from the elite level through to the recreational runner. The circuit is one of the few town centred races on the Grand Prix circuit with the narrow streets and numerous viewing vantage points guaranteeing an excellent race atmosphere. The popularity of this race has been evident since its inception in 2002 with large numbers taking part and growing year on year. With several sub 15 minute runs over the years, clearly then, the Lifford race is one of the key races that athletes make a point of attending and has been a happy hunting ground for fast times and personal bests. In recent years the club had an added feature of a Team Perpetual Shield Prize with the first four from each club to score. In 2014, the Foyle Valley men took the title, with the City of Derry women taking the title from the previous years winners Finn Valley. For individual and category winners, we will have cash prizes this year as well as a range of randomly drawn spot prizes.Lifford AC has been consistently striving for the best possible race experience for participants, with race quality and safety of paramount importance. Chip timing will be in operation again this year, with timing mats at both the start and finish. A big field of participants can take up to 30 seconds to cross the start line, so when personal bests or target times are being sought, chip timing is now an essential component of road races. In addition to chip timing, there will be changing, showers, parking, First Aid, post race water station and refreshments. This year, our Olympic standard track will be the venue for both the start and finish of the race, which should provide that added spring to tired legs over the last 400m. A fast course, the route has been certified for its accuracy and the race holds a current AAI permit. As part of a new initiative, Lifford AC has compiled a database of athletes taking part in its chip timed races. Each athlete will then be given his/her own Unique ID number which can be presented at every race which is organised by, or chip timed by the club. This takes away the need to pre register details for every race, as once we have your information, we don’t need it again. Race information will be stored on our database e.g. what races athletes took part in, their times, personal best for that race, etc. We will also be able to text your race time and position to you after the race. For anyone who took part in our Spring Series or recent chip timed races organised by the club and for whom we already have your information, we have texted your Unique ID number to you. Just present this on Wednesday evening and avoid the queues. For anyone who hasn’t received a Unique ID, simply fill out the information slip at Registration on Wednesday and you’ll be pre registered for all future races chip timed by the club. With the country enjoying a running boom at present and Fit 4 Life and Couch to 5K groups springing up everywhere, large numbers are expected on Wednesday evening. As a result, athletes are encouraged to arrive early on the race evening. Registration on the evening and number/chip collection will be at the athletic track from 6.00pm and will close at 7.15pm.For further information or if you have any queries on the Unique ID numbers, contact Brendan O’Donnell on 086-6007847 or email [email protected] CROWDS EXPECTED AT LIFFORD 5K THIS WEDNESDAY was last modified: July 13th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:donegalLifford 5Klast_img read more
