EDITORIAL: Become a political force

first_imgRecently, former Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding in addressing the Jamaican Diaspora at a town hall event in Lauderhill, Broward County, exhorted them to be organizes into a formidable political force. There’s nothing new in this message, as this community has been repeatedly urged to so organize themselves. But the message is nonetheless significant, needing to be urgently heeded.Large communities in NY and FloridaThe Jamaican community in Florida, although lacking empirical measurement, is estimated at some 550,000 residents, and in the New York area well over 1 million. Add other English-speaking Caribbean residents in Florida and New York the estimated population increase to 750,000 to 2 million respectively. However, despite this large and growing population the English-speaking Caribbean-American population can hardly be considered a political force. A handful has sought political office In Florida, only a handful of Caribbean-Americans have sought political office at city, county and state levels. It’s worse in the New York region. There could be so much more attention paid to the issues that affect the Caribbean-American community if there were more representatives from this community in elected office. In the US Congress there is only one English-speaking Caribbean-American, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, in the US House. There’s also Caribbean-roots Kamala Harris in the US Senate, but she more identifies with the African-American community than the Caribbean-American. It’s true that in the 2016 presidential elections, the Hillary Clinton campaign recognized and sought the support of Caribbean-American voters. Yet, a large percentage of Caribbean-Americans either didn’t register to vote, or voted.More Caribbean-Americans must voteIt’s believed if more Caribbean-Americans participate actively in the electoral process as voters, this will pull more people from this community to seek political office in various levels of government. And, if more Caribbean-Americans voted, and more were in elected office, the community could develop into a formidable political force. But for this to realistically occur several issues that are impeding the political strength of this community must be addressed. Looking at some of these issues, it is seen that:Not understanding America’s political systemSeveral people do not understand the America political system. Although urged to register to vote after becoming citizens some people do not understand why they can register as having No Party Affiliation (NPA) if they are two main parties in the country. Some do not understand that if they do register as NPA they cannot vote in primary elections, but can switch from one party to another in general elections. It is found that some potential  voters are even confused by the terms ‘Moderate Democrats,” “Conservative Republican,” Left Wing,” and “Right Wing.” Some people may be amused at this, but for those who are not purposely focused on the nation’s political landscape, there are people who are genuinely confused, and just can’t be bothered participating in the political process. Not believing votes will make a differenceThen, they’re those who genuinely believe their votes “will not make a difference” in an election. Despite advertisements, candidate and political party promotions, some assume, wrongly, if thousands of people are voting, their one vote doesn’t matter. It has been seen where this absurd assumption has resulted in the wrong official being elected to several offices. Caribbean- Americans must never belief their vote doesn’t matter. That vote means a better chance for the issue concerning them will be addressed by the individual voted for.Underestimate their influenceSome Caribbean-Americans genuinely underestimate the influence their community can have on the decisions made in different levels of government, particularly at the federal level. Perhaps because some people are from small communities in their respective Caribbean countries, and perceive America as this mighty power, they are unable to appreciate Caribbean-Americans can make a difference in the political chambers of America. Those harboring this negative way of thinking, just need look at the political influence of Cuban- Americans. This community exudes awesome power in Miami-Dade County and other areas of Florida. Haitian-Americans are also building themselves into a political force in South Florida and New York. Cuban-Americans and Haitian-Americans do believe they can influence change through their political endeavors. And, so can English Speaking Caribbean-Americans, but first they must believe in themselves as a community. It’s meaningless to complain behind doors about negative immigration and other policies when one can’t influence changeOf course, there’s also the issue of irresponsibility, where those qualified to become citizens, sit idly by without taking the effort to apply for citizenship.  Unless these people have negative legal issues there’s no excuse.Must address and fix issues These, and others, are common sense issues which shouldn’t be difficult for the community to address and fix. Now, as Bruce Golding pointed out in his address, is the time to fix these issues and for the Caribbean-American community to be more relevant politically.  There are new, frequent threats to the community from the current political establishment. It’s by being a formidable political force that these threats can be thwarted. If the voice of the community cannot be heard, then, of course, there’s no one listening.last_img read more

US Urge Haitians to End Political and Economic Crisis

first_imgPORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – The United States is urging all political stakeholders to put aside their differences and work towards “a peaceful and democratic solution” to the protests in Haiti where opposition parties are demanding the resignation of President Jovenel Moise.“The United States continues to urge all of Haiti’s political, economic, and civil society stakeholders to enter without delay or preconditions, an inclusive dialogue to identify and pursue a path to form a functioning government that will serve the Haitian people and address the country’s pressing economic and social concerns,” Washington said in a statement posted on the US Embassy website here. The political and economic crisis in Haiti was triggered by the publication in January 2019 of a report on the Venezuela-funded PetroCaribe Oil initiative, under which Caracas provided oil and other petroleum products to Haiti under a preferential agreement.Moise, who came to power in 2017, has denied any wrongdoing and has named former prime minister Evans Paul to head a team that would hold discussions with all stakeholders to discuss a way forward.Speaking on a radio programme here earlier this week, Moise reiterated the call for a national dialogue insisting “I am not attached to a mandate.“I am hooked on reforms. I want to talk about constitutional reform, for example. I want to talk about the reform of the energy sector, the digitization of the public administration. Today, we are in an acute crisis, but we can take advantage of this crisis to make this crisis an opportunity. We need stability in the country and to find that stability, we have to attack the system,” Moise told radio listeners. In its statement, Washington said that Haiti’s leaders need to work together “toward a peaceful and democratic solution now, with an increased sense of urgency.“The Haitian people are suffering; we stand with those Haitians who value peace while courageously calling for accountability. The United States deplores the current gridlock in Haiti which directly contributes to violence, a spike in humanitarian needs, and interruption of daily life for the Haitian people,” the statement added.Meanwhile, the Protestant Federation of Haiti, has announced plans to stage peaceful activities in the country “to implore God for Haiti”.It said that the first activity which will coincide with the 502nd anniversary of the Protestant Reformation here, ends on Saturday, while the second activity is planned for October 31 to November 2.Earlier this week, the Haitian Conference of Religious (CHR) staged a “national silent march” saying it had taken note of the “unprecedented humanitarian crisis in which the country is in the process of tipping over”It said also that the situation “is the result of a much deeper crisis affecting the very foundations of our coexistence in its political, economic, social and religious dimensions”.last_img read more

England Players to Sport Black Lives Matter Logo in Solidarity with…

first_imgThe England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said it took the decision with the full support of the England players led by Test captain Joe Root and stand-in captain for the first Test Ben Stokes. “Alisha and I are immensely proud to be asked and take part in a monumental moment in world sport, this amazing decision by the England and West Indies cricket teams to show their support for Black Lives Matter,” Deeney said. CMC The ECB’s chief executive officer, Tom Harrison stressed the decision was not intended as a political statement, adding that “this moment is about unity”. “In a mark of solidarity, the team will join the West Indies and carry an identical logo on their playing shirts,” it said in a statement on Thursday, three days after Cricket West Indies (CWI) made its announcement that the logo would be brandished on the left side of the shirt collars of the regional players. “There has to be equal opportunity and equal rights for all. We hope by making this stance we can play our part in standing shoulder-to-shoulder as a team and we hope that by continuing to raise awareness we can move towards a society in which the colour of your skin and your background has no bearing on your opportunities. MANCHESTER, England – England’s cricketers will follow the lead of their West Indies opponents and wear the Black Lives Matter logo on their shirt collars in the three-Test series starting next week. Insisting that there can be no place for racism in society or the sport of cricket “and we must do more to tackle it”, Harrison reiterated the ECB’s full support of the Black Lives Matter message. Root added that it was important to show solidarity to the black community and to raise much needed awareness around the topics of equality and justice. The two sides will face each other in second and third Tests at Old Trafford on July 16-20 and 24-28.center_img “It has become a message of solidarity and a drive for progress and societal change…. Our support of that message is not an endorsement, tacit or otherwise, of any political organisation, nor the backing of any group that calls for violence or condones illegal activity. We are aware of certain aspects of the movement that promote their own political views, and their actions are not supported in any way by the ECB and our players,” he said. The England team are currently preparing for the first Test, scheduled to start next Wednesday, in a bio-secure environment at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. All players and management live, train and play on-venue and is part of comprehensive medical and operational protocol to ensure all players and staff can play safely due to the impact of COVID-19. The Black Lives Matter emblem was designed by Alisha Hosannah, the partner of Troy Deeney, professional footballer and captain of Premier League side Watford Football Club. He was contacted by ECB and CWI and permission was granted for the logo to be displayed on the collar according to ICC regulations. “When I got the call, I didn’t hesitate to respond, because I know as sportspersons in the spotlight, how important our efforts are to bring about change and the role we play in moving towards change in our society. Watching cricket with my grandad shaped my childhood, so it’s great to be able to help England and West Indies Cricket to show their support in such a meaningful way.” “The England players and management are unified in this approach and will use the platform of international cricket to fully support the objective of eradicating racial prejudice wherever it exists,” the England captain said. “We have a responsibility to ensure that cricket is truly a game for everyone. We will shortly set out further steps that build on the work we have already done to make cricket more inclusive and diverse in order to address some of the barriers which still exist for some communities.” “We are proud that our players will stand alongside those from the West Indies and wear a logo that embodies that philosophy. It is fitting that they do so in solidarity with athletes from the football world who wore it first,” he said. “It is very simple, we believe there is no room for racism or any form of discrimination, anywhere,” Root added.last_img read more
