Tim Sherwood 1 Tim Sherwood has revealed he could be missing a number of key players against Sunderland after a sickness bug swept through the Aston Villa training ground.Sherwood refused to name the ill men but is facing an anxious wait to discover who will be available to play on Saturday for the visit of the Black Cats.“There’s a sickness bug around the training ground so there are a few players who have not been able to make training,” he said.“We have a couple of players, I don’t want to tell you who who they are but they’re not here today because they are ill.“They are not well today and the doc is having to do some overtime. We could miss a couple and there’s a couple who are not well now. I’d rather they weren’t well now rather than tomorrow.“There must be a bug going around, we’re just hoping it’s made its way to the north-east.”Sherwood could also be without Adama Traore at the weekend after the former Barcelona winger limped off in the League Cup win over Notts County on Tuesday with an ankle injury.“He hasn’t trained but we’re going to give him every opportunity to be fit,” said the boss.“He’s a massive talent, no-one wants him to be a sensation immediately more than I do but he has come from a weaker competition (Spain’s Segunda Division, with Barca’s B team) and it’s going to take him time.”
Thierry Henry has told talkSPORT THIS is the season Arsenal will end their title drought. The Gunners have not won the Premier League since 2003/04, when Henry was in his pomp, and have finished outside of the top two for the past decade. But Henry – widely regarded as Arsenal’s greatest ever player – believes Arsene Wenger’s current squad possesses the quality, depth and X-factor needed to return to the summit of English football.Wenger’s men have won their last four league games to move up to second in the table, level on points with leaders Manchester City. And Henry, speaking to Drivetime’s Adrian Durham and Darren Gough, said: “I genuinely think it is their year.“They are getting results against big teams now and are backing up those results after big games. That is the key.“Theo Walcott playing in the middle is pushing [Olivier] Giroud, and Giroud playing in the middle when Theo isn’t playing is pushing Theo. There is healthy competition there now that you need in the game.“Mesut Ozil, as well, has finally woken up. You know what he can do. He is an amazing player, a World Cup winner, with the touch, the vision, but he wasn’t always doing it on a daily basis with Arsenal. Now he is doing it.“Then you have [Santi] Cazorla. He is the brain of the team – the way he wants to play is how the team is going to play. Then there is the X-factor you always need to have to win a title – Alexis Sanchez. He is the guy that you know, when he is in tune, it is very difficult to beat Arsenal.“The back four is also doing very well. [Hector] Bellerin is doing well, Nacho Monreal is showing why he is at Arsenal and Petr Cech is doing what he is supposed to.”Thierry Henry was speaking to talkSPORT in his role as a Sky Academy Ambassador for Sky Academy Confidence Month

Derby County 1-3 Manchester United: Victory sees Louis van Gaal’s men through to the fifth round of the FA Cup 1 Manchester United booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 victory over Championship side Derby County. Goals from Wayne Rooney, Daley Blind and Juan Mata put Louis van Gaal’s men on the road to victory, after George Thorne had equalised for the Rams in the first half. After a quiet start on talkSPORT’s live commentary match, the England and Red Devils captain – who had another child with wife Coleen this week – received the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box and he curled a delightful effort into the far corner past former Liverpool shot-stopper Scott Carson. The Rams posed dangers against United as Nick Blackman looked lively on the wing, but it was the former West Brom midfielder who proved to be the Thorne in the first half for Van Gaal’s men. The 23-year-old made a darting run into the box and he controlled a brilliant ball over the top before poking his effort past De Gea from close range. The half-time whistle came too soon for Paul Clement’s men as they were enjoying possession and having the better chances, winger Blackman pulling a shot just wide after coming inside from the wing. The overall quality showed in the final half hour, as Blind got on the end of Jesse Lingard’s low cross, finishing coolly with 25 minutes left on the clock. Just 18 minutes later United confirmed the win as Anthony Martial worked well on the wing before pulling the ball back to Mata, who finished well across goal from six yards. The victory was a tough battle, more than the scoreline suggests, and it hands Van Gaal a lifeline after increasing pressure on the boss at Old Trafford in recent weeks. But this was a win against an out-of-form Championship side, who gave a good account of themselves on the night, and a Premier League meeting with Stoke is up next for the Red Devils.
1 Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores has urged his team not to take Manchester United’s injury-hit team lightly ahead of their Premier League clash on Wednesday.Injuries to the likes of captain Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones has seen Louis van Gaal blood a number of academy graduates in recent weeks.18-year-old defender Tim Fosu-Mensah and 20-year-old midfielder James Weir were the latest to be handed their debuts in United’s 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Sunday, while 18-year-old Marcus Rashford has starred with four goals in two games.Watford head to Old Trafford to face Van Gaal’s patched-up side on Wednesday night, but Flores does not believe United’s lengthy injury list makes them any easier to face.“I don’t like to say to the players, ‘come on boys, now Manchester United are a little bit weak because they have injuries, because they are younger, because they don’t have experience’, no, it is the opposite,” said Flores.“I try to send other messages to the players, saying take care and don’t relax. Yes, they are younger, but they have a lot of passion, and they want to show everyone they are ready to play in the Premier League.“So, of course we will play a very tough match, and this is the idea we try to translate to the players. Maybe this is not the best XI they have in the squad, but they are playing really, really well.”Academy product Rashford made his Premier League debut in the victory against Arsenal on Sunday, with his double against the Gunners following another brace in last week’s Europa League win against FC Midtjylland.“He looks really good and I love younger players,” Flores added. “I love how he moves to the space and how he moves inside the box.“He is a very good talent for the future of England and very good news for Manchester United.“With the younger players when they knock on the door, as a coach you need to open the door and say ‘okay you are ready to go’ and this is what has happened.“Manchester United have had a lot of injuries, a very difficult period for them, and this is the moment when the younger players use the opportunity to establish themselves in the team.”Asked if he had a plan in place to stop Rashford on Wednesday night, Flores joked: “It is impossible to show too many videos [to my squad] because he has played only two matches.” Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores is wary of the threat of Manchester United

Superintendent David Brewer has said they can fix all the problems by next July. “July 2008 is way too late,” UTLA President A.J. Duffy said. “Our members need support from their employer. If LAUSD cannot provide it, the union will.” Brewer announced Thursday morning that he expects 5,000 certificated employees – which includes teachers – to be affected by problems with today’s paychecks. Of those, about 300 will be underpaid, and the district has already contacted those to give them emergency checks. The district also has increased PROTEST: Union officials target the district’s ongoing problem of payroll glitches, which began in February. By Naush Boghossian STAFF WRITER United Teachers Los Angeles officers will camp out in an RV at Los Angeles Unified headquarters starting today to protest payroll glitches that have led to over- and underpayments for thousands of employees since February. customer-service hours to the weekend to help those with paycheck problems. But amid the increasing tension over the issue, LAUSD General Counsel Kevin Reed has issued a warning that UTLA should not be encouraging teacher walkouts to protest the problems. Duffy had threatened walkouts while testifying about the payroll problems in a Senate committee hearing last week. Reed said the language of the union’s collective-bargaining agreement precludes the union from engaging in work slowdowns, including walkouts. UTLA has already called for teachers to boycott after-school faculty meetings. But Reed said he hopes the teachers union will work with the district to resolve the problems. “We don’t know if (walkouts are) going to happen, but it is a situation where we believe that the instructional programs and operation of our schools are going to be impacted,” Reed said. “Right now we’re hoping to de-escalate with meaningful conversations.” email@example.comWant local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
