first_imgFrjtz, the Belgian-fries place on Valencia Street, will be closing on Jan. 28. Owner Santiago Rodriguez blamed the closing on increased costs, including rent, insurance and wages. He plans to reopen at another Mission site, but declined to disclose the location because he has not yet signed a contract. Khalid Mushasha, the new owner of the Valencia Street site, says he’s not ready to make an announcement about what’s going into the space. He says he’ll have more to share by the end of February, and an opening can be expected at the end of April. Four Lost Souls Productions will be producing …Stephen Adly Guirgis’s The Motherf***er with the Hat will be at the Mojo Theatre at 2940 16th St. on Jan. 18. It will be directed by Beverly Hills Playhouse’s Peter Allas. A Tiny DiscolandiaSan Francisco artist and miniaturist Joshua Smith has created a miniature of the old Discolandia Record Shop of 24th Street, which closed its doors in 2011. The scaled-down version of the iconic Mission institution is on exhibit at the Palo Alto Art Centre beginning Jan. 20. A self-taught miniaturist, Smith has been creating small sculptures of abandoned and decaying buildings for the last three years. While a new restaurant has moved into the music store’s old digs, their sign remains. The tiny Discolandia will be on display as part of an exhibit featuring diorama in contemporary art. The description of the exhibit says this about the contemporary practice of creating miniature worlds, a practice that dates back to 2600 B.C. in ancient Egypt: “Dioramas can turn even the most mundane of subjects into something special and worthy of attention; they direct focus and consideration on their narratives, encouraging an extended gaze; they are a means of escape from the everyday and a window into the dream world; they facilitate a suspension of belief; and at their best, like those earliest examples, blend fantasy and reality so seamlessly we are magically transported into another dimension.” Fundraise for newborns in PolandOn Jan. 14, WOSP will be holding its annual winter fundraiser to purchase medical equipment for newborns in Poland. The event will take place at The Polish Club, and will help purchase equipment to ensure that all babies born in Poland can have equal access to health care at The Polish Club at 3040 22nd St. from 4 to 9 p.m. Valencia Cyclery Valencia Cyclery will be open at 1065 Valencia St., selling kids bikes and repairing all bikes. Meanwhile, its store nearby at 1077 Valencia St. will be closed on Jan. 15 for six to 12 weeks while it does seismic retrofitting. New affordable housing promises new neighborhood jobs

first_imgAs many as 75 people gathered in the Mission on Saturday to apply for jobs to build the 157-unit, fully affordable housing project that will be built nearby, at 1950 Mission St., just north of 16th Street.Federal law requires the builder to ensure that low-income locals account for 30 percent of its workforce.“I want a job there so I can walk 10 minutes to work every day,” said Alexis Argueta, 25, who was born and raised in the Mission. “It is dope that the people here want to help the community,”Like others attending the job fair — one that lured in locals with pupusas, horchata and a DJ — Argueta was there to pick up information about unions, apprenticeship programs and jobs. Alexis Argueta at the job fair. Photo by Gisela Pérez de Acha“The outreach today is getting Mission residents excited about this”, said Miquel Penn, the community relations liaison for Swinerton Builders, the general contractor. “If they get hired, it is $2 million of Mission wages coming back to the neighborhood.”And that neighborhood is changing. Up until 2002, temporary structures at 1950 Mission St. housed the Phoenix Continuation High School. The lot was then left empty until 2015, when the city purchased the property and turned it into a Navigation Center for the homeless while Mission Housing  Development Corporation worked toward the affordable housing plan. Today it is surrounded by high-end yoga academies, some designer shops and “elegant imported tea” shops. And Argueta, like others, wants part of the pie that a high-paying construction job can offer.Even though the job fair was not hiring directly on the spot, more than 75 people signed in to receive more information regarding apprenticeship programs and how to become part of a union to qualify for a job.Applicants must be at least 17 years old and have a high school diploma, English skills and a social security number.“The work is hard, but the pay is good; way above the minimum wage,” said Faysal Ahmed while grabbing the flyers and information posters that were being handed out. He liked the idea of a stable job.Almost half of the recruiters on Saturday were women. The Carpenters Training Committee handed out flyers for the Women Can Build 2019 events where they enroll women without previous experience in an apprenticeship program.Photo by Gisela Pérez de Acha.Crisia Mendoza, who just moved from Virginia for better job opportunities, was skeptical. She doubts she can get hired and it failed to help when her cousin told her, women do not build. “They say it’s heavy work for us. But that’s not true,” she said. The local hires will be working on the first fully affordable project to go up in years. Some 51 percent of the tenants have to be from the neighborhood, according to Section 3, a federal provision of the Department of Housing and Urban Development enacted in 1968.Bridge Housing, one of the developers involved in the 1950 Mission St. project, has also promised that around 30 units will be allocated to homeless people.“Honestly, I’m just here for the work,” said one 30-year-old resident who did not wish to be named. His family is from El Salvador and he has been living in the Mission for 10 years. “Google, internet and the gringos are taking houses away from us,” he said.”I don’t agree with building new things, because the prices will still go up. But I have no choice, I have to work and support my family. I don’t want to be a gang member.”For more information on Apprenticeship Programs and job applications visit City Build’s webpage or contact Miquel Penn from Swinerton at MPenn@swinerton.com. Microsoft also developing Smartwatch

first_imgAdvertisement Microsoft is the latest company tipped to be building a smartwatch after it was reported that the company is developing a touchscreen watch device.Supplier executives told the Wall street Journal that Microsoft had asked them to ship components for a watch, including 1.5-inch displays, and one source claimed to have met with the firm’s R&D team.Microsoft actually tried to get into the watch game in the early 2000s with its Smart Personal Objects Technology initiative. SPOT-powered watches arrived in 2004 before fizzling out in 2008. – Advertisement – With the development of its Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets, Microsoft has ramped up its hardware division. Last week, it was reported that the company is working on a 7-inch tablet as well. The software giant has worked closely with Nokia and other hardware partners on its Windows Phone platform, but device sales are still significantly left than competing platforms from Apple and Google. An industry-wide race to build a modern smartwatch have kept speculation high on the future of intelligent timekeeping. Samsung confirmed last month that it is working on such a project, while Apple is reportedly working on an iOS-based watch for release later this year. Google has also been named as investigating the possibility of a smartwatch. With Google set to deliver its Glass prototypes soon, wearable computingis poised to make the jump from science-fiction to reality. Windows 9 to have a start Menu

Microsoft Releases A Preview Of Project Spartan

first_imgAdvertisement Microsoft wasn’t kidding when it promised to ship Windows 10 builds more quickly. Today, less than two weeks after its last iteration, the company has kicked out a new build that contains an important new feature: Project Spartan. If you are currently on the “fast ring” of the Windows Insider program, say hello to the new code. For the rest of you on the more conservative build cycles, wait for the dust to settle. You can, of course, change your ring setting and get the new tools more quickly. (Note: This is not the upcoming build that will support a host more Windows Phone handsets. This build is nearly all about Project Spartan.)Project Spartan, the current, public codename of Microsoft’s new browser, will replace its venerable predecessor not all at once, but in steps. This fact has caused some confusion. – Advertisement – What can Project Spartan do? It comes with Cortana, the company’s digital assistant that lives in both current builds of Windows Phone and Windows 10. By bringing it to the browser, Microsoft makes progress on what appears to be an implicit goal to ensure that Cortana lands on every screen where the company vends a platform. (Xbox, gear up.)Microsoft highlighted pen capabilities, simple reading views, and a rendering engine built for the modern Web as points in the browser’s favor during a call. This is the first public release of Project Spartan. So what we will see is a preview of Microsoft’s browser vision. Project Spartan remains an incomplete product, the company said in a call. That’s hardly a sin for beta software, of course, but it will be a decent data point to stress-test Project Spartan regardless — how far along and stable is this new vision?Build, Microsoft’s developer conference, is next month, meaning that Microsoft might eventually hit pause on new builds to store up new bits and tiddles to show off at the event. Today, however, was not such a case.Via: Techcrunchlast_img read more

Uganda to Host the East Africa Cyber Defence Conference

first_imgJames Saaka – Executive Director, National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U). Advertisement Cyber security experts from the East Africa region will from 6th to 7th September, 2018 meet in Kampala to attend the 7th annual edition of the East Africa Cyber Defence conference that is co-organized by the NRD Cyber Security and the National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA Uganda) that will focus its discussion on how the 5 East African member states can prepare for cyber attacks. The two day conference is expected to attract about 150 cyber security professionals along with policy makers and representatives from Critical Infrastructure operators. As of 2017, cyber attacks are on many occasions not an institutional, but national and even regional issue as cyber incidents can have great consequences to both the citizenry and the economy. – Advertisement – The unfortunate occurrence of cyber crisis in critical sectors such as finance, transport, public health, etc. can have disastrous effects and even lead to crisis at a national level, hence affecting the whole society. Sub-Saharan Africa’s economic growth is projected to reach 3.1% by the end of 2018, and to average 3.6% in 2020 as reported by Africa’s Pulse, a bi-annual analysis of the state of African economies conducted by the World Bank.Leapfrogging over old technologies and business models Western countries took decades to get used to, African countries are improving in their adoption of technology in carrying out ordinary day-to-day tasks. This fast pace absorption of technologies, the rapidly increasing usage of cloud-based solutions as well as the increasing economic gains are bringing new challenges to securing the cyber environment in East Africa.According to 2017 Cyber Security report, Uganda loses nearly USD$42m (about UGX158 billion) annually to cyber attacks, the losses are reported to be higher in neighboring countries. The conference will be addressing how organizations, which are in particularly prone to cyber incidents, should be preparing and how they should effectively handle the crisis in case of its occurrence.NRD Cyber Security CEO, Vilius Benetis, was very enthusiastic about the progress East Africa region has made so far. In a statement Vilius said, the most effective way to prevent cyber attacks, is to be ahead by having good visibility of potential threats and a plan of how to react adequately.“It is great to see that the region is already taking steps forward as the countries start thinking and talking about preparation before the actual crisis occurs,” he said.James Saaka, the Executive Director, NITA-U, shared that Government of Uganda through NITA-U, established the National Computer Emergency Response Team and Coordination Center (CERT-UG/CC) to support centralized response for cyber related incidents as well as serve as a focal point for further building and implementing the National Culture of cyber security.”Relatedly, Arnold Mangeni, the Director Information Security at NITA-U highlighted that Government has out in place the National Information Security Framework which provides for minimum security outcomes every Government agency and Critical Information Infrastructure operator is required to maintain. This includes incident response and crisis management largely focused on a prevention and proactive approach. He further added that collaborations such as these are key for increasing cyber security capacity for both public and private sector entities which is critical for any effective protection response.last_img read more

GLENN DAY Bridgestone Invitational

Obviously this is a time of year when the event planners at the PGA have a lapse. With the seniors having just played all three of their majors one after the other the PGA tour this week stages the Bridgestone Invitational. Two weeks previous we had the Open and next week we have the USPGA Championship. Genius. Not that Phil Mickelson will be complaining as he comes he in sensational form having won the Scottish Open and The Open and will fancy his chances of completing a (very rare indeed) treble. The last twelve years at Firestone has seen only two winners, Darren Clarke 2003 and Craig Parry 2002, start at bigger than 50/1 suggesting the cream generally rises to the top at a course that depending on weather conditions can play quite tricky. The winning score averages about 12 under par but when Tiger won in ’07 he was the only player to break par!As readers of my golf blog will know I am not a great one for punting in majors and WGC events and will always look for a bit of value outside the top 15 or 20 so players as these days they are usually priced up way too short.I was on Hideki Matsuyama in the Open (at 350/1) but following another decent effort across the pond last week he is now only a 50s poke. All value now gone with him!For the winner, or at least a good run I am looking at another player improving at a rate of knots, Harris English.Having won his maiden tour title at the St Jude Classic, holding off an inspired finish from Phil Mickelson, English has posted two 15th place finishes in his last two events at the John Deere Classic and more importantly at The Open where he showed he can adapt his game to different conditions and compete against the very best in the game. Long enough and accurate enough from the tee he has a good short game and as proven when winning at Southwind his putter can be very hot even when under pressure. His stats stack up against everything and he stands 14th on the all round ranking. At around the 150/1 mark that will do for me! read more
